Corb Lund Band

Abbey Lounge March 5, 2003

Well this show was a nice surprise. Not being at all familiar with the band, I was prodded to attend this show by a couple of WMBR DJs, specifically Doug Gesler of Lost Highway and Bruce Sylvester of Troubadour. So how could I say no, I did have to duck out of a great set by the Chandler Travis Philharmonic, but I need practice in show hopping for next week's trip to SXSW. Corb will be there too and I think he's going to make a good impression on the folks in Austin.

Corb Lund, comes from Alberta, Canada (near Edmonton and yes, he likes hockey!). His 3 piece band played solid honky tonk music and Corb is an engaging performer. His new release "Five Dollar Bill" on Stony Plain Records is full of kick up your heels cowboy goodness, heartbreak, lonesome blues and drinking. Plenty to jangle your spurs to. The release was produced by Harry Stinton (Dead Reckoners, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett) and Stinton plays drums on a few tracks too which were recorded in Nashville and Edmonton.. And the hat? Well he's got real cowboy blood in him. Check out the cover of "Five Dollar Bill" and you'll see a very young Corb riding a bucking bull (he stayed on 8 seconds). Here's different shot. On the inside cover is Corb's mom doing some rodeo riding. Corb is hoping to come back in the fall... Can I get a Yee Ha!
