Ain't No Sunshine |
From "Just As I Am" Inspired by the really great documentary "Still Bill" where filmmakers visited Bill over 11 years to put together this vivid portrait of a superstar that insists he's still bill. |

| Corb Lund |
Tough on Equipment |
From "Horse Soldier! Horse Soldier!" (Stony Plain) Corb has just been signed to New*West and was at their annual party. He plans a New*West release in fall of 2009. |
| Tim Easton |
Broke My Heart |
From his upcoming release "Porcupine" (New*West) due out 4/28 |
| Deadstring Brothers |
Always A Friend of Mine |
From their upcoming release "Sao Paulo" (Bloodshot). The band has a whole new line up. Masha is doing her own band and she's been replaced by 2 singers one of which plays a mean fidde. Look for the new release (and hopefully a tour) late spring. |
| Ha Ha Tonka |
Walking on the Devil's Backbone |
From their upcoming rlease "Novel Sounds of the Neuveau South" (Bloodshot) due out this summer. These guys continue to impress me with their harmonies and energetic performances. |
| Justin Townes Earle |
Mama's Eyes |
From his latest "Midnight at the Movies" (Bloodshot). If he has his mother's eyes, than his mother has some pretty good looking eyes. wow! |
| Flace Jimenez |
Ta Bueno Compadres |
A big (well deserved) love fest for Doug Sahm at Antone's last Thursday night. Led mostly by his energetic son, Shawn, who was just enjoying all the great moments. Also coincides with the tribute release "Keep My Soul: A Tribute to Doug Sahm" where performers from that show played. Here's a few tracks, with the artist who played them to give you a sample of the evening. |

I'll Show You How |
From her new one "The Stars Are Out" (Sugar Hill) Boston's SB&BS played 7 shows during SXSW, including a guest spot at the Doug Sahm tribute at Antones (they rocked it) and a great showcase at Mother Egan's where Will Kimbrough joined them on "Glory Be" (his tune), great way to end a Thursday, I'll tell you what. SB&BS celebrate a CD release Friday April 10 at Church |
| Dave Alvin |
Artesia |
Dave Alvin hosted a tribute to Chris Gaffney at the Continental Club. The line up was the Guilty Women, plus Bill Kirchen. Wow. This song comes from the upcoming Gaffney tribute due out in May on Yep Roc. Other artists include Alejandro Escovedo, Big Sandy w/ Los Straitjackets, John Doe, Freddy Fender and more. |
| Eilen Jewell |
Sea of Tears |
Title track to their upcoming release (Signature Sounds). These guys just get better and better. Eilen more animated and Jerry Miller always impressed. I love watching the audience react to some of his guitar 'rolls.' Great stuff. They celebrate a CD release on April 25 at Narrow's Center for the Arts. |
| Jon Langford & His Sadies |
Are You the Entertainer |
From "Mayors on the Moon" OK this is a bit of a cheat, but the song sums up so much all the artists doing multiple gigs either at SXSW or just in life. He performed this with the Pine Valley Cosmonauts at Momo's. |
| Peggy Sue |
Revision |
From the "Lover Gone" EP (self?). This UK import into trippy roots music was recently signed to Yep Roc and you can pick up their music at their website. |
| Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit |
Seven Mile Island |
From his self-titled release (lightning rod). The 400 Unit played a day show behind Home Slice, a pizza place in South Austin. The weather couldn't have been more perfect and they delivered. |
| The Right Ons |
Take It Easy |
From spain, this band is a rocking great time. They recorded thier new CD "Look Inside Now!" at Somerville's Q Division studios and did an unbelievable performance a few months back. They duplicated that in Austin and more. Wow, a great live band. |
| Jack Oblivian & the Tennessee Tearjerkers |
Against the Wall |
from his latest release "The Disco Outlaw" (Goner Records). Jack O and the band closed out our SXSW adventure at Red 7 and I have to say I was very happy where I was. Much better than the Beerland appearance a couple years back. Mostly I think because of sound and I wasn't breathing in smoke (directly). Anyhoo, great guitar noise from the south. |
| The Sonics |
Psycho |
from "Here are the Sonics" The Sonics played SXSW and it was a nice treat to see them play their hits. Especially to a younger crowd, though most of them were older than me;-) |
